ArcelorMittal Dofasco is a leading North American steel solutions provider, serving customers throughout North America with high quality flat rolled steels (include hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized, Extragal, Galvalume and tinplate), tubular products, laser welded blanks and Zyplex, a proprietary laminate. ArcelorMittal Dofasco's wide range of steel products is sold to customers in the automotive, construction, energy, manufacturing, pipe and tube, appliance, packaging and steel distribution industries.

Highlights of Our Sustainability Performance:
  • In 2003, listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the fifth year in a row. For the fourth consecutive year, named the Market Sector Leader in the Basic Resources Sector of the Index. Dofasco is the only Canadian company ranked as a sector leader in the Index and the only steel company in the world in the Index.

  • In 2002, received a "Healthy Workplace Award" from the National Quality Institute in recognition of Dofasco's commitment to our people, including their health, safety and well-being.

  • In 2002, co-winner of the Corporate Competitiveness Award, one of the inaugural GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence.

  • A Founding Sponsor of the Sustainable Enterprise Academy at the Schulich School of Business at York University

  • In 1998 and 2001, winner of the Voluntary Challenge and Registry Inc. (VCR) Leadership Award in the Primary Metals sector for the proactive steps taken to reduce energy use and emissions of CO2 to address climate change.

  • Led the North American steel industry in the adoption of steel technologies identified in the International Iron and Steel Institute's (IISI) "Ultra Light Steel Auto Body" (ULSAB) project, including the manufacture of tubes for hydroformed parts production, laser welded blanks, and the development of an ultra-light, ultra-strong, steel hybrid composite called Zyplex™. ULSAB's goal was to create a lighter, stronger auto body, which would result in an automobile that was safer, lighter, more energy efficient and had lower exhaust emissions.

  • In 1997, was the first company in Canada to sign a voluntary Environmental Management Agreement with the Provincial and Federal governments. This proactive agreement set out Dofasco's commitments for improvements in waste, water, air and energy use beyond what is required by regulation. Dofasco has met or is on or ahead of schedule to meet all its commitments before the agreement expires at the end of 2005.

  • In 2003, helped launch and is actively participating in the IISI's CO2 Breakthrough Programme, an international research initiative aimed at identifying potential new technologies and processes for making steel with significantly reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Dofasco's participation reflects the company's belief that new technologies and innovative approaches to energy use will offer long-term sustainable solutions for reducing emissions.

  • Reduced Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) by 8% since 2000, ahead of pace to meet the industry's voluntary commitment to reduce SEC by 10% between 2000 and 2010. Dofasco previously reduced SEC by nearly 20% between 1990 and 2000 under a prior voluntary commitment with the Government of Canada.

  • Achieved a 77% total reduction in consumption and emission of 117 substances through the Federal Government's Accelerated Reduction and Elimination of Toxics Program (ARET) over a 10 year time frame - exceeding the 50% reduction commitment.

  • Participate in numerous industry and community multi-stakeholder initiatives, including Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association, Hamilton's Vision 20/20 sustainable community initiative, Hamilton's Bay Area Restoration Council and Clean Air Hamilton.

  • Designated a “Caring Company” by the Imagine Program of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. Annually, company and employee donations total more than $2.5 million annually to civic and cultural causes, education (including Research Chairs at McMaster University and the University of British Columbia), health care and social services. Included was more than $425,000 towards the development of community walking trails (Dofasco Shore Acres Creek Discovery Walk in Burlington, The Dofasco 2000 Trail in Stoney Creek and the Hamilton Waterfront Trail) and the preservation and restoration of local wetlands.
