Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is an Ontario-based company, whose principal business
is the generation and sale of electricity. OPG's goal is to be a premier North American
energy company, while operating in a safe, open and environmentally responsible
manner. Our focus is on producing reliable electricity from our competitive generation
assets; power trading; and commercial energy sales activities. OPG owns one of the
most diversified, low cost and low emission portfolios of generating assets in North
America. As of December 31, 2001, our generating portfolio consists of 22,600 MW
of capacity.
Highlights of Our Sustainable Development Performance:
- Earned a Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
in 2002 for OPG's energy efficiency program .
- For the second consecutive year, OPG's Greenhouse Gas Action Plan was designated
"Gold Champion Level Reporter" by Canada's Climate Change Voluntary Challenge and
Registry (VCR).
- Between 1999 and 2001, OPG invested $90 million in performance improvements at
our fossil-fueled stations. Acid gas emissions (NOx and SO2) have shown steady reductions
for the past 5 years.
- Recent investments will reduce NO emissions at two fossil plants by up to 12,000
tonnes per year by the end of 2003.
- In 2001, OPG's Pickering plant was selected from among 111 facilities around the
world to receive the Wildlife Habitat Council's Corporate Habitat of the Year Award
and the Darlington plant was recognized as a pioneering site for the Corporate Land
for Learning "Fifty for the Future" initiative.
- In 2002, through partners, OPG planted its 1 millionth tree and will plant a further
one million trees. Awards include: in 2000, the State-of-the-Lakes Ecosystems Conference
Success Story Award (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environment Canada);
in 2001, Carolinian Canada's Conservation Award and in 2002, Wildlife Habitat Canada's
Forest Stewardship Recognition Program Award.
- Launched in 2001 OPG Ventures Inc. will invest $100 million over three years in
entrepreneurial companies or energy technology funds that complement OPG's core
business and expertise. To date, it have invested in such companies or funds as
Envenergy Inc., Solicore Inc., Nth Power and Sustainable Asset Management (SAM).

OPG is an active participant in many industry associations including the World Business
Council for Sustainable Development and e7 an association of nine of the world's
leading electricity companies committed to promoting sustainable energy development.
