Suncor Energy Inc. is an integrated energy company strategically focused on developing
one of the world's largest petroleum resource basins - Canada's Athabasca oil sands.
In 1967, Suncor made history by pioneering commercial crude oil production from
oil sands in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta. Since then, Suncor has become
a major North American energy producer and marketer and in 2006 reached a new milestone
- production of our billionth barrel of oil.
To Suncor, being a sustainable energy company means managing company's business
in a way that enhances social and economic benefits to society, while striving to
minimize the environmental impacts associated with resource development.
Highlights of Our Sustainable Development Performance:
- Suncor has voluntarily reduced greenhouse gas emission intensity (emissions per
unit of production) by approximately 32% since 1990, although total emissions increased
due to significant production growth.
- Suncor is finding new ways to use water and land wisely. Technologies such as
in-situ extraction allow us to reduce the environmental intensity of our operations
even as we produce more oil. Reclamation efforts also moved forward and we remain
on track to reclaim our first tailings pond by 2010. Last year, we planted the three
millionth tree at our oil sands facility - the culmination of 30 years of detailed
on-the-ground work to carefully reclaim the land we use.
- In 2004, Suncor and our partners opened the 30-megawatt Magrath Wind Power Project
in southern Alberta. We set the stage for future wind projects by optioning land,
working with stakeholders and studying wind resources in several locations. We also
received regulatory approval to build an ethanol plant in Sarnia that will help
us meet consumer demand for cleaner burning renewable fuels.
- We will strive to continue to create economic prosperity and opportunity in our
communities. With our commitment to invest 1% of pretax profit to charities and
non-profit groups, our community investments will grow in step with our business
to deliver long-term benefits.
- We will look for ways to enhance the sustainability of our current and future
operations through innovation and technology. Our plans include developing a new
wind farm every 12 to 18 months and commissioning a new ethanol plant in 2006.
- In 2006, Suncor Energy Inc. has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World
Index for the eighth consecutive year.
- Suncor Energy Inc. was named to the 2006 list of "Alberta's Most Respected Corporations"
by Alberta Venture magazine. Annually, the magazine asks 2,000 senior executives
across Alberta to rank 50 listed organizations in five different performance categories.
The 50 organizations represent the top employers in each of Alberta's major industry
sectors. Suncor was recognized in the "Culture of Innovation" and "Environmental
Stewardship" categories.
- In 2005, Suncor received in 2005 the Award of Excellence in Corporate Reporting
for the Oil & Gas sector by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).
The award honours excellence in financial reporting, governance disclosure and sustainable
development reporting, including web-based disclosure.
